Meet the Team

Chief Executive Officer; Founder

In addition to being our CEO and founder, Aaron Burgess, PhD, MSW, (he/they) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work at University of North Alabama. His research and practice are rooted in his calling to help people who have experienced spiritual trauma to find healing. These experiences led him to found Joyful Living, LLC.

Born and raised in Tyler County, West Virginia, Aaron is extremely proud of his Appalachian roots. He is a two-time Distinguished Mountaineer Award recipient, having received these awards for his LGBTQ and HIV advocacy and activism throughout his beloved home state. He also received the Excellence Award from the DC Concerned Providers Coalition for his LGBTQ advocacy.

Aaron has been living well with HIV for over a decade and hopes to remind other queer folks and those living with HIV in Appalachia, the South, and beyond to remember that “you are loved beyond measure.”

Aaron says that “it is the privilege and honor of my life to be the founder and CEO of Joyful Living, LLC. It is my hope to help empower as many people as possible to find their own joy in living!”
